I Am My Father's Garden

These are the voices and teachings of my garden. The garden speaks to me, teaches me and disciplines me. For me, it is the Creator speaking through His creation.

So You Want to Plant a Garden?

The first consideration is how much space do you have for a garden?  Do you live on acreage and have unlimited space, a large backyard, flower beds, pots on the patio, kitchen window?  You can always find space to plant a few seeds. Similarly, if we are open, the Lord will always lead us to places where we can pour into someone’s life.  We simply must remain open, watch and listen for His voice.  But oh, that’s another message.  Back to gardening!  😊

If you have acreage or a fairly large back yard, there are many ways that you can plant your garden:

  • Select a large space or multiple spaces and turn it up for planting
  • In in your back yard, it’s best to build up the space for your garden either with wooden logs, brick or stone and mortar, cement blocks, or anything that you have.  If you really want to go all out and best protect your garden from rodents and insects, build it up.  Below are some options.

So here, I had my landscaper create a space in my back yard.  He used stone and mortar.  It’s about six inches high.  It was a bit expensive, but it’s permanent.  I hope the family who buys our house will love to garden!

My neighbor, Laura, had some great garden boxes built.  These are high enough that the rabbits and rodents don’t easily get in.  I also love how these are separated into sections. She generally plants different types of greens (cabbage, kale, lettuce, etc. in each of the boxes).  Laura’s garden is an exercise of love with her children.  They have learned to garden at a very early age, even taking plants to their schoolteachers.

My gardening friend, Jay Turner, was very creative in creating his backyard garden space with cement blocks.  He later also planted greens in the holes in the blocks. Very creative!

And lastly for the Cadillac of backyard gardens, my Master Gardener friend, Alicia Haskins went all out and built an environment that totally protects her produce from critters and makes it easy to work the garden.  She even put in lighting and irrigation.  Her harvest each year is amazing!
