I always seem to feel gratitude when I sit on my back porch and look out on this scene. The oak trees remind me of a different set of oak trees in my grandmother’s front yard in the country in Mississippi. We didn’t have grass in the front yard. We raked the dirt. Even with dirt my grandmother wanted it looking smooth and neat. This is why I fail to understand why so many people don’t take care of their homes and community. It’s not about being rich or poor, it’s about taking pride in whatever you have. Why would we expect to be given more if we don’t take care of what we have? When I think about from whence I’ve come, how can I not be grateful? I am so thankful for parents, grandparents, friends and family that taught me pride and respect and gave me a will to do better. So many people look at where you are today and make assumptions without knowing the back story. I’m proud of my story. The good, the bad and the ugly. All of it! I’m just a Mississippi country girl trying to find my way in these United States of Texas, and I’m grateful.
